Dignity, once gained, can never be taken away from you. It persists for a lifetime. Obtaining dignity is another matter. Some are born with it, others develop it along the way. Dignity can be expressed through one’s attitude or the way one approaches life. Some command dignity from others who cannot help but see them in a dignified manner. It is through one’s deeds, not words, that somebody achieves the worthiness of respect from peers.
Where does dignity come from? It is not something to be found, but rather it is earned from one’s peers. When someone performs a dignity inducing feat for others, the state of dignity will more likely be rewarded. One feat however is not sufficient. One must do a series of dignified actions to thus become a dignified person. Over time, one will then develop a dignified reputation. This is a consequence of reliably expressing dignity.
Just how valuable is dignity? Can’t we live just fine without it? While it is not necessary to our survival in the way food and shelter is, it is part and parcel to living a meaningful existence. When one lacks dignity, they cannot confidently navigate through the world. They do not have the respect of their peers and carry out less realised lives as a result. They die without having their potential actualised.
What are the most effective means of developing dignity? First is always speaking the truth and expressing what is on your mind efficiently to others. To hold your tongue is a disservice to yourself and your self-worth. Second is standing with good posture and navigating space in a confident and assured manner. Third is being a man of your word and always following though with your promises. This creates trust with others and cultivates dignity.
Anyone with sufficient practice can develop dignity. Doing so is a worthwhile investment as the world shifts when you move in a dignified manner. People treat you with respect and listen to what you have to say. They take you seriously and will be eager to collaborate or form a connection. Doors will open as a consequence and opportunities that were once obscure will come to light. Treat the matter of dignity earnestly.
