Rather than pursue happiness, consider seeking experience instead. Whereas happiness comes and goes, experience is more concrete. Experience is all around us: in the air we breathe, the ground beneath our feet, soaring in the clouds, even in the smells that percolate our nostrils. This is what should be sought out for in life. Forget positive emotion.
A mental shift takes place when we seek experience. Suddenly life becomes a never ending series of opportunities. The world beckons to us in a gentle voice saying, “Explore me”. Our worldview strengthens as we sample the different textures, shades, and colours that constitute reality. This is a shift you can undergo regardless of what life phase you’re in. Begin today and who knows who you’ll become tomorrow.
Perhaps the most potent consequence of seeking experience is the acceptance of the cosmic perspective. In the grand scheme of things we are not significant. This is okay and should be a welcomed truth. No longer does the weight of the world lie on our shoulders. We belong to a cosmic speck and should adjust our expectations accordingly. How can we be so hard on ourselves when we properly recognise the vastness of space?
Find the others who share your taste for experience. Pinpoint an adventure buddy to sample experience with on a consistent basis. Now your learning will derive from two sources: experience and each other. There is no better setting for discovering a friend’s character than in a wild or exotic environment. This is where you see how they handle adversity and discomfort. Where their true being emerges.
Seeking experience is not for the weak willed. Courage is a prerequisite as is being comfortable with one’s discomfort. Nothing is assured in this journey except that memories (good and bad) will be forged. If you’re determined however to experience experience for its own sake, nothing will hold you back. An adventure of a lifetime awaits if you want it. Go forth and explore.
