Proper reflection has become something of a lost art in modern times. When giving immediate responses is the norm, deeper contemplation cannot take root. We have become distracted amidst the noise. With reels and tweets vying for our constant attention, how can we expect to practice introspection? Yet practice we must if we hope to achieve any understanding of ourselves.
A potent medium for reflection is journaling. At night, just before you begin your bedtime ritual, try journaling for a short duration. Reflect on what happened to you during the day. What surprised you? Did you progress in any desired area of your life? How was your energy level? Did any conversation or human interaction stand out?
Journaling, like any worthwhile activity, will take practice and dedication. Reflection is a muscle that needs to be flexed regularly. It enables us to take stock on how our life is going and if any course correction is necessary. It is one of the most personal things you can do for yourself. Create space for reflection to flourish. Over time, reflecting will become automatic and something you do fluidly.
Wander thinking is another vehicle for reflection. Letting your mind be uninhibited and without a strict structure can lead to surprising insight. My favourite place to practice wander thinking is while sitting on a bench in a park. Viewing the greenery as my thoughts coalesce creates the alchemy for reflection. One thing I often reflect on is my age, 29, and everything that lead to me being where I am and to who I have become.
When done right, reflection becomes more than just a healthy exercise. It becomes an art. Something we need to protect and curate. It is a valuable object that needs to be guarded from noise and disturbance. Seek the quiet. Carve out the time. Reflection is of the utmost importance for your wellbeing.
