The world becomes less mysterious to a contemplative mind. What appears as fuzzy abstract noise turns into recognisable patterns after prolonged thought. Connections are weaved together to form structure from which understanding can emerge. With understanding comes a diminished fear as what once lied in the shadows is illuminated. A point of no return is reached and understanding begets further understanding.
The benefits of having a contemplative mind are numerous. As alluded to earlier, contemplation leads to a rich understanding of both the world and our own minds. There are no bounds to where you can contemplate and you are only limited by your own curiosity. Contemplation can be done anywhere and at any time. However, being in a quiet environment is most suitable. When we contemplate, we become more knowledgable about ourselves and how we tick.
We have never lived in a time less optimal for contemplation than today. With the advent and proliferation of the smart phone and social media, we are bombarded by an endless stream of noise. The world has become exceedingly loud and distracting. Our phone is constantly vying for our attention as is by design. It urgently notifies us about matters that do not warrant urgency. We keep being sucked out of the real world and into our screens.
Time for contemplation must be carved out therefore. Turn off the distracting phone and sit with your thoughts in a quiet room. Let them wander. With practice you will be able to control the direction of your thoughts. Patterns will coalesce and insights will spring into fruition. This is the seed of the contemplative mind. You are in control. You are in the driver’s seat. Direct your thinking to the novel and exotic.
With a fully equipped contemplative mind, the world is your oyster. As others rush around their daily business, you can slow down. With a clear mind comes a clear vision of your surroundings and how things function. Pitfalls can be avoided and problems can be calmly and incisively solved. You’ll develop a deeper appreciation of your own inner working as well the intricate components of nature. All thanks to following a contemplative practice.
